Re: Head of the Schuylkill Regatta 10/28/18

Thanks Stewart! Head racing is always a blast.

Ed, the same thing happened to me at Navy Day last year. My course was so bad, that my average splits were sub 2, but my overall time was like 2:06 pace or something.

Nice job Ed! That turn out of Columbia took me by surprise too since it's not really a turn as much as an angle...

I ended up with a third place finish in the Lwt 2x though so overall a good race!

Re: Quaker City Regatta

Nice to see you working your way through the locals Ed! I'm surprised anyone was even racing at all on Saturday!! Though you might get some free speed from the fast current, the extra flow does bring its own challenges like the ones you mentioned. Its good that your technical skills are progressing ...

Re: Back on the water

Sadly we don't get too many "quiet and calm" mornings in Philadelphia unless you are out in the middle of winter or at 4:30 in the morning. But starting your day with a long row in a single is great. At my old club I was often the only person out in the morning, in the middle of farm country. Those ...

Re: Wearable technology

Garmin Vivo Active watches are pretty good. Not too expensive and pretty durable. They come with both on the water and indoor rowing apps. I use it every day. The real-time data is not as accurate as a SpeedCoach (it tends to round up on pace and stroke rate), but it has the ability to sync data rig...

Re: Schuylkill Navy Regatta

Yes things were much nicer at Club Nats! I won't be racing the rest of the summer, but I'll see you at the head races in the fall!

Re: Schuylkill Navy Regatta

Ed, the wakes from the official's launches were more than a minor nuisance. They were unbearable, and they officials had no concern for the races. In short, they did a terrible job. In my 4x race, we dealt with about 1300m of wakes, from Strawberry Mansion bridge to the finish line. It was a disgrac...

Re: HIIT - does it get easier to recover from in time?

IMO, you should not go for a true Max effort more than once a week, if not less. It takes your body 2-3 days to fully recover from a true max session. I've always felt that you get better results form 2-3 sub-max workouts, with the rest being steady state. Sub-max is dependent on what you are traini...

Re: Schuylkill Navy Regatts

Bill, are you going to IDR? Also, what's your new team. Thanks Paul, the current accounted for some of the time pick up; but we were going way harder than our practice runs and way faster than last year on the same river with some current. As you know lots on variables on the water. I will be at ID...

Re: Schuylkill Navy Regatts

Ed, nice job! I was racing as well. I was in the 2x and the 4x but didn't win any races. It was a long day but a lot of fun!

Re: Your favourite workout

5x5 minutes with 5 minute rest. This is one of my favorite/ most hated workouts. It should be done at 2K + 3-4". I kept saying I'd do that workout -- so simple yet effective. I haven't done your version (though I keep meaning to). I did the 1500 X 5 today (5') from the full PP, very similar. My tim...

Re: OK Ed - 2nd Sprint Regatta

Glen, I didn't mean to put you off from coming up here! The top end competition is very good, but there are plenty of masters of all abilities up here. I think you'd do alright. Just don't expect to win everything. The summer racing scene up here is a blast, and you get to be around so much ro...

Re: OK Ed - 2nd Sprint Regatta

Glen, I'd highly recommend coming up this way for the Independence Day Regatta. There's some very stiff competition here, but you can enter lots of races over the three days to get some good experience. I think the Master's competition is much stronger up here than in the South due to the concentrat...

Re: What Training Have You Done Today?

Went out with the team in four 2x's and did some race pace stuff. 6x500m at different rates, then supposed to be 7x750m at a slightly slower pace which ended up just being at race pace as well. We didn't have enough time to get all the 750s in so I made it through 2 full pieces and then almost a ful...
