Re: Steady State ... row to heart rate?
Gentleman, thank you all. Yes, on intervals I do overcook, on last interval I work to MHR. Really was talking about SS longer distances only. I think there a really two choices here, stick to a pace and let the HR drift up...or pin to a HR and not worry about the fact that I'll inevitably get slower...

Steady State ... row to heart rate?
Struggle with targeting pace for longer distances (>= 6k). Is there any benefit (or harm) in rowing to heart rate vs. pace? Just tried 9k @ 125bpm (I am 62 so don't want to over cook it), I think this will help my motivation, love doing intervals, not so enamored with steady state and long distances...

Re: Claw grip vs. fist grip on handle
Thanks all. I think the issue might be I am shorter and weigh less that most. My hands aren't huge so the stress on my fingers must put a strain on my forearms is all I can think of. Always cognizant of (as Glenn says) leaving my hands behind, but the sheer force of my leg drive must be too much for...

Claw grip vs. fist grip on handle
Nearing 3M meters and something just dawned on (stupid) me. I have always rowed with a clawed grip (no thumbs) and often times my forearms fatigue on certain rows first. I tried something last night using a fist grip instead, right off the bat my forearms didn't fatigue, it seemed I had more power i...

Developing non-rowing lower half muscles
Although I do free weights for my upper body all that I do for my lower half and cardio is C2 work.
I've developed piriformis syndrome, really need something to target and balance those lower half muscles that C2 doesn't hit.
Thanks.

Re: Pete Plan 2017
8,000m @ 2:14.4 26 SPM. Back hurts less, but aches more. Every day just deciding whether to rub a little dirt in it or shut it down. @cal - welcome, my fitness was zero when I started last June. 1.2M meters later, better shape then I've been in decades. Just get on and row the numbers will draw you ...

Re: Pete Plan 2017
Managed 8,000m @ 2:15.1 without the back giving out. Still hurts a bit so most of the row was making sure only the lower half of my body and core are involved in the drive. Faster than the normal recovery row and the heart was pumping, ramped it up to 25/26 SPM which helped. @gordon - welcome back t...

Re: Pete Plan 2017
Back in the saddle albeit just testing the waters. 15' @ 2:14 just to see how the back would hold up. Middle vertebrae on my back just feels swollen and tender. Wasn't going to wait another day, feels alright but have to protect it which means so much for the PP for now.

Re: Pete Plan 2017
Tweaked my back yesterday, not sure if it was from the speed intervals on Monday, but feels like a knife between my ribs and no better today. Sleeping last night was a real joy :-( Frustrated feeling of interrupting PP shows I am addicted. @paul - solid row. @elk - be too aggressive now and then, be...

PP Cycle 2 - Week 2.5 5,000m DF125
Hard distance, last was 2:06.8, this was 2:06.0. Couldn't push it further. Doing week 2 next week as this was week 3 done out of order.
@ivo - excellent impressive after all those intervals.

Re: Pete Plan 2017
@gordon - had the same issue, I ended up trying to be (overly) conscious of handle in my left hand when I drive which made me straighten out. My right arm is way stronger than my left. Now I could ask a weirder question, what does your head do on the drive, mine drops to the left when I pull and the...
