My personal gym is a C2 PM3 and a TACX i-magig VR bike set up. + a stretching mat. This is all you need really - interesting Cv work and very joint freindly. The tacx bike is a superb complimentarary piece of equipment to trhe C2 - loads of software to keep you interested including real live video o...

Thanks Iain - by 'rested' i was thinking that the arms and shoulders are not doing much when on the bike compared with the erg. I realise that the legs do most of the work in both disciplines, probably more in cycling. What I;m trying to figure is, can the heart (and the whole CV systen) recover eno...

Post training heart recovery?
Do the heart muscles recover quicker than other muscles? I ask this question because I train mainly on the bike and use the erg on rest days sometimes. I also do sessions using bike and erg - so the heart is always doing the work even when muscles are utilised in a different way or rested. Maybe the...

Just a few observations - (generally speaking) Cyclists train for longer than rowers and develop a better CV system and fat burning efficiency. Cyclists upper body and core strength is crap - especially in older riders. The magority of cyclists train for events of longer than 20 minutes endurance - ...

27.44 mph - that's quite a time trial for age 68 - I'm impressed! John - that pb is 4 years old - wish I could do that now. All of my bike pb's done since I was 62/64 tho'. 25m 55:14, 50m 1,51:53. 100m 3,59:52. 12h 262.68miles. I used to visit the gym twice a week during winter in those years and d...

I have my own little gym with a turbo bike next to the erg. I calibrate the turbo using a run down test. I've replicated several ramp tests done in the sports lab (supervised by a sports scientist) on my own machine and I reckon that they are within +/- 5% certainly +/- 10%. In my current state of f...

I can produce about 300w on my i-magic gym bike for about the same percieved effort and HR that it takes to do 200w on the erg. My own gym bike is reasonably close to results I've had done in the sports lab using a Kingcycle. I'll look up some actual results for the bike and erg and see if I can dra...

I would guess that the CV work outs on the erg are of more benefit to the cyclist than the low spm strength stuff? Unless you are a track sprinter the extra muscle mass and strength is probably a handicap. I've experimented with pace on the erg trying to replicate tempo riding - for me its about 2K ...

I mix training between the bike and erg and have come to the conclusion that one compliments the other. My base training this year has all been on the erg - yesterday I used the i-magic (bike turbo with PC program) and was pleasantly surprised to see performance gains although I have not used the bi...

Day 31 and completed my commitment :D Finished as I intended at the start, with a 10K today 40:52.2 av HR 140 This is 5 min quicker and 9bpm lower than the first 10K - and it was far easier. Only had 1 rest day and totalled 507K for the month which included a pb @ 10K and HM :D Going fishing and dri...

Day 29 - just 3 days left. Rest day yesterday (went to see the contest at Manchester UK) getting bored with 10K's so tried a half Marathon. My first. 88:36.7 / 2:06.00 / 140 av HR. If someone had told me on day 1 that I would do this after 27 days of training I would have laughed at them  Just ...

Day 27 Decided that doing a pb - or near pb 10K every day was getting a bit boring and may have become counterproductive. Changed tack for past 3 days and done 67km mixed, with aim of completing 500K for Tasmania during Jan. One 10K piece was steady @ 2:05.8 av HR 138 that's 6 bpm lower than 8 days ...
