Re: Legs extension at the finish?

You should definitely avoid completely locking out your legs at the finish, this really gives the chance to cause some injury when rocking over and starting the recovery. In general, your legs should finish at a level of extension that you can support your body to open and then rock back at. This me...

Re: Arms feel like doing more than my legs

It is probably a mix of two things. 1. Yes, you are probably using your arms too much - are they bent and pulling on the handle before your legs are flat? 2. It can also just be a stark different in arm strength compared to leg strength. Doing long ergs takes a while to get used to, and even the act...

Re: Where should I push with my feet; ball, balanced, heel?

Try squatting without using your heels. This is where you generate some serious power. I used to find that my long ergs would have slightly different technique feet wise compared to tests and sprints. The lower the split i'm trying to get, the more time my heels stays on the floor. The key is to use...

Re: Is erging to music sometimes counterproductive?

I can't erg without something to take my mind off the rowing. The only times I have done it without music is only when we had a cox coxing ergs at my rowing club. Otherwise the music is always on. For tests I make playlists with power songs at certain points and it definitely gives me 'free speed' B)

Re: Newb rowing to improve fitness.

At this stage the biggest thing is getting into a habit and in my view you want to have a bit of variety (but not too much) and ensure you are able to see progress. One mistake a lot of people make is trying to do a 2k test every week - which is a terrible approach. Find a few workouts that you like...

Re: Does anyone flip the screen up during rowing

I hate not having the screen. We once did a novel 2km 'test' at my uni club. All of our screens were flipped up (and being watched by other squad members) and we had to all row in rhythm, with our stroke man at the end and setting the cadence for approx 1750m but at that point each person got told h...

Hugh Jackman 5k Test

Here is some good news for a lot of us - Hugh Jackman aka Wolverine posted a picture of a 5km row.. 19:45! TBH I would have expected something a bit quicker from a guy so well conditioned and built.. I imagine he would nail a 500m sprint though.. https://www.instagram.com/p/BTTyIWkDVfW/?taken-by=the...

Re: Is rowing only once a week a waste of time?

Absolutely worth it. Not only do you keep your heart ticking over, but if done properly you are building strength and endurance in the legs which will translate onto the bike. You might even enjoy putting in some different types of workouts depending on your goals. Intervals e.g. 3x 2km w/ 6 minute ...

Re: Possible 2K Drop?

6:40 should be do-able if you could hold 1:40 for 1500m and still have a lot of scope for training and improvements. We had a general rule of thumb at one of my clubs that each month of training, if done in full (which was 6 days a week mixed of 2 ergs, 2 weights sessions and 4 on the water sessions...

Re: Under 7:20 now...still looking for SUB 7!

Surprised by the comments towards weight training here. You NEED to do weight training if you want to start getting sub 7 and beyond. You just need to be clever about the make up of those sessions. Depending on your current amount of weight training, you may need a couple of weeks to get used to lif...

The swaying of the boat will do your core well and maybe give you a small experience of what rowers on the river face!

Re: Cycling crosstraining

Cycling more absolutely will translate into extra erg speed. Like some have said, not as much as if you were doing all that extra time on an erg, but if you don't have access to do so then it is probably the next best thing. A mix of long steady state (45 - 90 mins UT2) and intervals (e.g. warm up a...

Re: Drag Factor SS vs Hard Session

I got taught and brainwashed to use 135 for drag factor at all times. Some lightweights in the squad were allowed to use 125 but 135 had to be the drag for any score. This is meant to replicate the drag for a coxless 4. I'm sure that the indoor championships and all official records have to be done ...
