I'd have to conclude that there are many definitions of LSD then. I was referring to the level that would have some training effect. Conversational pace is fine for fun, recovery, and basic fitness and fat loss. Just no training effect, except compared to nothing. There just haven't been any serious...

Why would you want "long slow distance" to be hard. You should be able to do it all day and not be exhausted. On the hand if FCR or FCD were easy then that would be nice. Don't know what FCR or FCD are, and maybe don't want to. Oh if I had a choice, I wouldn't "want" LSD to be hard. But I don't bel...

*One rowing-specific euphemism I’ve heard for a good old fashioned butt-whuppin’ is “horizon job”. Anybody got any others? Ah yes, as in "they became specs on the horizon". It wasn't long ago I heard of the unenviable position known as BCB. It is related to and often equivalent to DFL. More descrip...

"You can use it for fitness but why go erging if you can go rowing". More power to you if you have that option, but to put in the meters for real improvement, most don't have that option. The erg is the most convenient thing I can think of right there in my garage. When I consider what extra time I ...

I am not a professional in the field, but read all I can on the subject. And this being the year I turn a half century, keenly interested in the topic. What John testifies is entirely consistent with the best that I've read from textbooks and numerous articles. And that is that the endurance system ...

But Paul, Isn't "Ruppian" kind of below the belt, a clear escalation of what could be combustable conversation?? :x Mike & All, Update. Maybe Mike will have access some data, but the IRAs were this weekend, and I'm happy to see that my Huskies redeemed themselves at the freshman level, taking gold a...

Hey Mike, Incredible amount of good quality work. You mentioned jamcotimes here. I don't know how long for, or whether at all, they archive data. But if they do, you'd be very interested in this year's Cal/Washington dual that took place in Redwood Shores, CA. I watched it live on jamcotimes.com. My...

Oops, I followed the link and read Xeno's plan again. He sets the HR at 80%, which is UT1 (right?), and much harder than I thought. Pushing that for 80 min would be a challenge. Without reading the whole plan again, I don't know if he suggests any UT2 type rowing (is "paddle" easier than "steady st...

Rick, I think you are right on target and make a great all around opening for this thread. HR is something you find useful and informative, but you don't try to design a precisely detailed plan around it. HR measurement does take a grain of salt to use, but when in the habit of using one, one gets t...

I am tempted to just say it hardly matters. That is, at 6'6", you have just as bright a rowing future as you desire. It is the one attribute that those of us without, can't get. Just get to work building lean mass onto that frame and in a handful of years, somewhere well above 200 lbs., you can reac...

This is old news to Xeno's fans and to those junkies of the WP Level 4. I'm finding it hard to believe that US scientists are regarding this understanding as "new", or controversial. There's plenty of reading material from Europe to support it and coaches there have been on board longer than here it...

Re: Concept 2 Logging
I am New to the Rowing World and use a concept rower at 24 hour fitness. I'd like to begin logging my rows in, but am not quite sure how to use that form. For 500 meters I have been averaging 2:50 - what does that mean..Also, I like to row straight through, keeping my heart rate up and recently hav...

Clarification on Fly 'n Die: Sometimes the descriptions of fly 'n die make it sound like any kind of up front, fast start it that. But some very renowned rowers/ergers successfully start out strong, settle for the middle, and then hopefully have something left for a sprint. I would characterize true...

I don't think a 2k is long enough to get to your max HR. For a race, I think a 5k or a 6k is a better choice and a pretty good test. There are a variety of tests for your max HR that generally involve increasing the intensity of the row over a set of continous intervals until failure. They sound li...
