Re: Sharpening for BIRC

What are you doing at the moment? What's your fitness level? How have you been progressing lately? Have been doing 150-200k a month, mostly longer low-rate rows, a couple of PP intervals a week. Current fitness is 17:40 5k. Progressing on the longer distances. I recently did 10x500m 1R at 1:40.3 av...

Re: Overtraining or am i being a wimp?

I was in a similar situation with a poor diet, and was drinking maybe about 20 cans of lager a week (5 nights x 4 cans). Suffered from terrible insomnia, was wide-awake at 3am usually. Would have to caffeine up in the morning to normalize everything. My diet was poor too really. Was about 104kg 6ft....

Re: Is there a genuine performance advantage to erging outdoors?

I do 95% of my training outside. I would say yes it has a performance advantage if for instance, you moved inside your house and opened a window or something. But if you compared outside to an air-conditioned gym, its negligible.

Re: Bradley Wiggins BRIC

Did 6:22. Finished 21st. Started aiming much faster, also had trouble at the start, (fake false), so certainly not a max result. Anybody idea about his weight now? Yeah the 1.31.5 first 500m killed his chances, as he must have done the 1st 500m in 1.28 with the racing start and and error he made. S...

Re: Bradley Wiggins BRIC

I think his weight is 93kg now, according to James Cracknell. The whole thing seems a disappointment for me as I assumed he'd be a lightweight, where he would (on a fitness basis) have an outside chance of a lightweight start at International rowing. But as a heavyweight, even if he did 6:02, he's j...

Rep Question

Trying to improve my 5k time. What would deliver me better improvement:

3x2k 5R at 1:44.9 pace (have done this)
or 4x2k 5R at 1:46.3 pace.

I find the 4th rep always gets me, so is it better to get more metres under the belt at a quick temp or go for max on 3 reps. Thoughts?

Re: Base Building Questions

What are your age/weight/height stats? 39, 92kg 6ft tall. Currently fitness is sub 18min 5k, low 37min 10k, I guess 6:40ish for 2k (but havent done one recently). I am not fully-fit as I had an injury which kept me from rowing, so have some room for improvement, but we arent talking easy noob gains...

Re: Base Building Questions

I need a little help with base building. Questions: 1. How long do results take? Eg for me to complete these sessions at under 2min pace for same heart rate? 2. If I sprint the last min of the row, will this mess up the session? 3. Should I slow down the pace towards the end, due to cardiac drift? ...

Re: Base Building Questions

Guessing your resting heart rate to be around 55 (it could well be lower) that puts this training firmly into UT2 UT2. Light aerobic, low intensity work. Sustainable and fat burning Relaxed. Able to carry on a conversation. Which may well what you want to achieve, but would explain to me why you fi...

Re: Base Building Questions

You say you use 70-80% of max heart rate (MHR). Is that just MHR * 0.8, or are you calculating your Heart Rate Reserve (MHR - Resting Heart Rate) and then using that to calculate the band? See http://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/app.php/page/heart-rate-bands-calculator Because the two are very d...

Hi HJS,

Thanks for the advice. Can you tell me why the sprint messes the session up, the kind of science behind it?

Thx

Base Building Questions

I need a little help with base building. I plan to do 5-6 rows a week of 1hr in duration. These rows to be low rate 20-22, and 70-80% (130-148) of Max HR rate. At the moment, to stay within this range my speed is 2:02-2:05 pace, which feels pretty easy. Questions: 1. How long do results take? Eg for...
