Re: Help me go sub-7:00 for the 2k
so I tested peak power again yesterday and managed to hit 730 watts (1:18 pace) @ 170 DF. Pretty sure I could do a bit better with some training. But is it worth it? Will being able to pull, say, 830 watts or even 1000 make me any faster over 2k?

Re: Help me go sub-7:00 for the 2k
fwiw larry i agree with you that lots and lots of aerobic work can lead to loss of muscle mass, especially if you're an ectomorph (aka hard gainer). i've experienced it myself with running, cycling, rowing and even yoga. whenever i do too much cardio i will inevitably begin to lose strength, no matt...

Re: Help me go sub-7:00 for the 2k
peak power can be improved with training, but there's a genetic component, as well. if you were born with a high proportion of slow twitch muscle fibers, you'll likely have great endurance but never the leg speed required to generate high peak power. for better or worse, i'm the reverse. always had ...

Re: Help me go sub-7:00 for the 2k
if your low pull is a 1:35, you have lots of room for improvement. what was your stroke rate? just as a point of reference, last i tried, my low pull was 1:20 at ~47 spm. do speed intervals once or twice a week and the power will come. g/l. I don't member exactly, but probably 35-40. You're right, ...

Re: Help me go sub-7:00 for the 2k
good thread, OP. many of us have the same goal. unless you're naturally gifted, breaking 7 min is not easy! you'll find that the faster you get, the more difficult it becomes to improve. and i agree with carl that the hard part isn't the 2k itself...it's maintaining the required focus and intensity ...

Re: O'Neill Fitness Test
right, but you're a trained rower. the charts are meant for anyone off the street. i think the average person with no experience on an erg would struggle to hit o'neill's "average" numbers. idk maybe i'm wrong?

Re: O'Neill Fitness Test
oh i realize it's pretty pointless. still tempted though. i am a bit surprised by how aggressive some of his targets are, especially considering they've been dumbed down for people with no rowing experience. in my case (45M LWT), i'd need to hit 1168m for "good" and 1208m for "excellent". my 2k pace...

O'Neill Fitness Test
http://indoorsportservices.co.uk/training/oneill_test has anyone tried this? you row 4 minutes at max effort, record the distance and then compare against their benchmarks. the masochist in me wants to try, but i would have no idea how to pace it? probably a bit longer than a 1k TT (which i've also ...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Well done SSBob! I feel your pain. Took a year to get from 7:08 to 7:02.5. Expecting another one (I hope that's all it is) to get the last 3 seconds. You stomped your 500 though by the looks of your signature line! That's pretty good for your size I would think. yeah, that magic 7:00 line seems to ...

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
just pulled a 7:08 2k, which was a PB by 4 sec. easy gains are well behind me at this point...took me 3+ months to shave that 4 seconds. anyway, onwards and upwards!

Re: Pete Plan Autumn 2015
just back from a week-long vacation with no rowing and lots of eating. i dove straight back in with the PP waterfall last night.... probably not the wisest, but i backed off the pace by 1-2 sec and it actually felt ok. 1:58.3 ave. i'll do a bunch of SS this week and then start another PP cycle towar...

Re: Pete Plan Autumn 2015
I'm sad to see this thread dying a slow death. Its time limit was spelled from the start, when it was named. The thread itself was started to take the place of the one entitled Summer when that was no longer appropriate to its name. We are now in the middle of the northern winter and the indoor rac...

Re: Pete Plan Autumn 2015
Once Chris' race is over, I might start a revised thread for those of us doing a modified PP. I just think that the Fall PP thread was race prep for this Winter. Most of the initial guys have fallen off the wagon so to speak or moved over to a different plan. that's a great idea. i'd love to have a...

Re: Pete Plan Autumn 2015
I'm sad to see this thread dying a slow death. :( In spite of the attrition, I will probably stick with the Pete Plan (slightly neutered) for a while until I no longer find it beneficial and/or get bored with it. Did the 4x2k last night and felt pretty good. I think it was helpful putting another da...
