Re: How to get good (national level) fast?

I have been sculling for 30 years, or more, there are no shortcuts or ways to wave a magic wand...Unless, you have some physiological gifts... Your program is about right, maybe you should make sure you are doing 2 or 3 weights a week, anything less is waste of time. Look up zercher squats on the we...

Re: How to minimize the 2k erg test pain

Its easy for the first couple of hundred of meters...Any hard race or erg you need to divide the it into parts e.g. the start, 500m mark finish etc have tactical goals. Use cue words, eg finish, flow, sprint. When the pain really starts the mental side needs to takeover to block out the pain. I try ...

Re: Other erg users in the gym with rubbish technique

I used to erg at home until I renovated my and the wife said no more erg, my erg room became my bedroom. So I have had to erg at my nearest gym. I am astounded at the absolutely shocking technique. The worst person started a catch with the handle near his toes and he had three kinks in his arm draw,...

Finishers

Went rowing yesterday and the new coach says slow hands around the turn is the better way to row. A couple of months ago I was ergoing at my local gym and saw a kid, on the erg next to me, his hands were mega slow. Turns out he is rowing at Yale. I have always rowed, and thought the ideal is that th...

Re: Leaning to Port

One other thing - it is quite common for the left hand to row your right around, in other words to row to the port. The left hand gets more leveridge. This gets fixed, like balance, without notice by doing the hours.

Re: Leaning to Port

Tape a small level across the top of your stretcher or across the rigger, if you have winged rigger. You will get feedback on balance instantly I read a top coach say how he coaches balance - he said he can't. Keep sculling and the balance will come. It sounds like you are new to the single, its a h...

Re: Rower Has Got The Bike Bug

Thanks for your reply Jack. I agree you about pack riding and I suspect that there is plenty of MTB racing out there. My plan is from here: 1. Get the best carbon bike I can afford. 2. Do some tests on a watt bike to see where I am at. 3. Sus out the masters bike club and see what they can offer; ti...

Rower Has Got The Bike Bug

I have been rowing/sculling for 34years and just got hooked on cycling. The reason is I bought an inexpensive bike, which is basically a road bike with flat handlebars and it feels so good to ride.I turn 49 this year and I am considering masters bike racing at 50. Anyone out there compete in rowing ...

I am thinking of naming my single merkin; short for relatives of Mercedes.

I find merkin the funniest word in English. Anyone who has a good dictionary look it up. It does not mean take a Merc out for a drive.

Great post from Laura. I just belted out a 2k lifetime PB 6:40.9. The previous season PB was 6:47. I was thinking while I was cranking out my 2k that they are so bloody hard. Why do I do it? I can barely breathe. Put in ten stroke efforts (it takes my mind off the pain)...Till 500 metres to go, only...

Roland. I am not worried about Nick. I am thinking about the guy that won last year, and working on my weaknesses so I can beat him. Nugent and Searle are old, ex-liteweights. I gave up the grog from 2 Jan until the above result. And have had a couple since then. I dont have a lot of athletic abilit...

I did a PB on the splits for 4 x 1k. With all splits under 3:20. The times of the splits were 3:18.9, 3:18.2, 3:18.9 and 3:19.9. I should be able to crack 6:40 for 2k. My wife was not around to yell at me, "ROBERT, why do you do it" whilst taking in the big breaths. The Labradoodle though was wonder...

I won the race by the huge amount of 1.26 seconds. 3:40 was enough to win the Australian Masters "B" single scull last year in winter. Incidently, the winner went on to win the same grade at the Royal Henley Regatta in Canada. In the same race of the Australian Masters last year I got 3:48. I spend ...
