Re: Tips to avoid back pain
Great explanations, thanks to both of you! No surprise I'm sure but I consider one of my biggest technical flaws is still using too much arm pull and not enough leg push. Once you get a bad habit it's hard to break, I guess. The good news, however, is after struggling with rower induced back pain fo...

Re: Tips to avoid back pain
One thing that helped me a lot as far as back pain was having more of a forward tilt of my pelvis. Think lifting thighs slightly, which tilts the pelvis back, and bending forward into a slump -- that is exactly opposite of good rowing posture. Tilt the pelvis forward and try to maintain it. Scootin...

Re: 24 week Pete Plan
As far as “what pace”, do cycling or running plans prescribe pace to beginners? My recollection is that you just go out and do it based on how you feel. I know that comes across smart ass, but getting into rowing is the same. Feel it out. You will know when you are going too hard. And going “not to...

Re: Statins
I'm now on a low dosage of Rosuvastatin. Only the first day today, butstill feeling good. Managed a 5k today, plus a short session on the ski erg and 5k on the bike. No ill effects as yet, but I didn't expect any. As for them not affecting mood, all I can say to that is BOL***#S.  I've...

Re: Statins
After being told I had to take statins for high cholesterol tried them for 2 weeks and my times for the 2K dropped by over a minute. My limbs were aching, joints creasing me and I developed a dry cough. I stopped taking them, and almost immediately times were back on my old target time. I'm no athl...

Re: 24 week Pete Plan
I've been trying to keep my long sessions at 15 strokes per minute but based on another beginner thread here somewhere I think that may be too slow (although it seems to really encourage better form, which the PP emphasizes). 15 is way too low. Any lower than 18, which is very low anyway, is notabl...

Re: 24 week Pete Plan
Cool, thanks for the info. I guess I have no idea if I can do a 5000 comfortably. I did one already, but it was the first day i had my Concept 2 so i was barely breathing...because I clearly wasn't doing it correctly. I don't really know how hard I should push or what "comfortable" means, so I'll j...

Re: 24 week Pete Plan
My sense is that at least part of your question is the same one that I have never found an answer for -- exactly how does one pick a starting target split time for the 5000? 2:10? 2:50? Flip a coin? Seems like there should be some guideline, perhaps based on HR. You could base it on conversational ...

Re: Tips for keeping the back out of the stroke?
Try putting a front stop on the rail to give yourself a more appropriate catch posture. Seat back, trunk swung forward and straight, knees at 45°, shins vertical. It sounds like to get into that position I'll need to bend more at the hips. I'll give it a try. Putting on a front stop was what was re...

Re: Tips for keeping the back out of the stroke?
Thanks everyone. I actually was able to get on a C2 in front of a mirror today. I think that at least part of the problem may be due to over reaching on the catch -- I was confident that I wasn't doing this, until I looked at the mirror. We'll see. I still think I'm trying to apply power too early w...

Re: Pete Plan Thread
I'm on week 6 of PP and have a couple of questions re doing this correctly. At the beginning I decided on my pace for the long distance part, and set the interval pace at 10 seconds faster per 500m. I never came up with what seemed to be a specific formula for picking these pace times and I believe...

Re: Tips for keeping the back out of the stroke?
Thanks for the comments! I'll see if I can get someone to video me. IIRC, the "avoid heel lift" was from a Dark Horse Rowing video. I'll not use them as an information source again. hjs, are you saying that with correct form eventually the back should strengthen enough such that this is no longer an...

Tips for keeping the back out of the stroke?
I've had a lot of trouble with back pain (mostly upper, between shoulder blades) keeping me off the rower. I've done some strengthening work as prescribed by a physical therapist and while that has helped the real key seems to be keeping my back muscles relaxed as I start the drive ie making sure th...
