Re: Weight adjustment

Watts per weight is not the best of ideas for a ranking system. The rankings would then be dominated by hyperactive five year old boys. There is nothing that can beat them pound for pound!

I have been doing a 5k test every month for the development squad. Unfortunately, my times are all around 17:30 this year as opposed to 17:00 last year. I feel all the on water coaching (combined with some specific erg work) has helped me get more leg into the stroke, but my times are much slower. (...

Head of the Charles

How many ergers were at the Head of the Charles nine days ago? We had perfect weather here in Boston for the race. I had the good fortune to see the race from #6 seat in a +50 men's eight. It was a fantastic ride! Photos from our race. http://www.row2k.com/hotc/photo.cfm?action=pf&dir=2006Fall/HOCR2...

Annual Boston (rowing) marathon

Fred, I hope to have one of the front row seats next April.

To anyone that ergs, this is the way to watch the Boston Marathon. You don't get tired standing around for three hours while all the runners go by!

Cheers,

How time flies when you aren't doing a test!

I saw in my in box that our 2K test is due by midnight tonight. Yikes! I haven't been paying attention to the team qualification requirements. I have to confess, my heart isn't in to erging this year. If I qualify, I can't go. The toy industry does 60% of its sales in November and December. Being he...

Re: Slides

PaulF, Based on your low rigid stroke rate, I'm amazed you are finding even a 1 second difference. Of course a person's body mechanics don't magically change on the slides. When you row at the same meters per stroke and keep your stroke rate the same, your time and pace are also going to be exactly...

Mark, To answer your question, yes, I see 1 second difference in pace when going at my maximum ability. This has puzzled me for some time and is part of the reason that I took up outdoor rowing. My hope was that the coaching associated with the outdoor rowing would improve my indoor stroke. So far, ...

Rowing camp

I just returned from a week at rowing camp. The camp is actually a family camp that includes rowing in the line up of activities. This is a bit different than the typical rowing camp which offer"all rowing, all the time", but it suits our family needs well. My 12 year old daughter and 11 year old ni...

Slides

I use slides a lot with my erg. I find that the motion is more similar to that of a boat and the motion is easier on my back. I can increase my erg scores by 1 second over 500 meters by using the slides. It doesn't matter if it is 500m or a marathon. However, I have not heard of any other person hav...

Community Rowing

I have been rowing with Community Rowing since July of last year. They have many boats for individuals and for groups. There are several groups that you can join depending on experience and goals. It sounds like you would be a good fit with the group that rows M/W/F/Sat mornings and is geared toward...

Connecting other ergs

I voted for connecting more than one erg. Only that way will we be able to allow virtual rowers to join us in the next Boston Erg Marathon.

Cheers,

Rick and I are fairly evenly matched. We are both 50 years old. I am up to 218 pounds versus his 225 and I am only 6'4" versus his 6'5", but we pull close to the same erg times. (Too close for comfort!) He has kept me honest during the last two Newbuyport IRC races by turning in times around 6:35. I...

Introduction to Canoeist

Hello, My name is Paul Flack. I took the name "Canoeist" about five years ago when I started rowing on an erg. My background is canoeing. I took up rowing on the water last year when my family went to a family camp in Maine that included rowing as one of the activities. (Google "Medomak" if interest...

How to get on the development squad

I rowed a few races last season with times around 6:32. But, I was only 49 years old then. I have never raced in the 50 year old class, so I don't qualify. Now I need to prove that I haven't slowed down by hitting the magic 50 mark. Seems fair enough to me. I am sure that if I sit down on the erg an...

Hanging Chad

Wasn't it a few hanging chads on the Florida ballots that threw the election in favour of Mr. Bush? :D
