Re: Some help for a newbie please! *long post*
If I've read it right I should tie the handle to the chain guard and then try pushing with my legs until I've lifted off the seat? Yes. Sometimes a coach will hold the handle for you while you do this drill, but if there is no coach available then you tie the handle to the chain guard. In that case...

Re: Some help for a newbie please! *long post*
I tried to follow your advice about pushing off from the rest of the seat and that helped me a little bit. Wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with the handle though (this isn't my machine I'm using so I can't bring a rope with me but I tried to sort of get the feeling of pushing off without the ...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
I did a typical 16K this morning with a few "power 30's" tossed in before finishing. A friend is in the sunlight coming around the bend:

Hudson also has some DIY instructions on repairs at the bottom of this page: https://www.hudsonboatworks.com/?p=information Let me pass along two tips I got from an expert: For large repairs use two part epoxy with some filler mixed in and fiberglass. Westmarine is one source for these materials. Ad...

Re: Help! How to correct my leaning to starboard??
I am assuming you have checked the offset of the oarlocks. Usually the starboard oarlock is about 1/2 inch or so higher than the portside oarlock so you can have your right hand tucked under your left hand and also slightly ahead or behind (your choice) the other at the crossover and keep the boat l...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
HI Paul, I agree it makes sense to delay the squaring in a headwind. Hi Nosmo, I came across this. So what I was thinking is called ground effect. http://www.phys.washington.edu/users/jeff/courses/ken_young_webs/208A/fscbrb.htm During the recovery if the blades are off the water you will get a smal...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
.... Funny thing is that I once co-authored an article in fluid dynamics but I did the mathematics part only and I don't have much intuition or experience in that field. Don't feel bad, I did a turbulence experiment for my Ph.D. thesis. Forgot about this thread and hadn't been thinking about it. I'...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCyza6UpBl4 I did 18K steady state. "Steady state" is code for a leisurely row. The video shows typical conditions I have to deal with. This morning there was some mist, and sometimes I have to stop and take photos of deer, herons, cranes, and other creatures. And a c...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
People usually say because you are using a lower stroke rate into a head wind, it should be easier to get the timing right. It usually feels easier to me to set the boat when I am going into a headwind. I suspect when going into a headwind that you get extra stability from the flow of air around th...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
RR: That's good to know and makes sense now that I think about it, but obviously it would be hard to increase the gearing in the middle of a row. Byron: I have one of those kayak carts and may give it a try, but that bank is awful steep. I should probably look for another location to put in and tak...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
Ideally you would need to increase your gearing(more outboard on the oars) when rowing with the wind and current, otherwise you would be rating too high to keep pace with the conditions. Agree about the wind. It makes a big difference. However the effect of the current is zero to first approximatio...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
Hi Paul, The eagle sightings sound wonderful. Yesterday there were about a dozen deer swimming and splashing as they crossed from an island to the shore and the woods. I was fumbling trying to get my camera out of the case and by the time I did it was too late. Oh well, maybe next time. Some Aldens ...

Re: What OTW Training have you done today
I did 18K this morning with ideal conditions--flat water and temperature in the low 50's. There is a new crane family on our river and I had to stop and take a picture.
