Re: Key workouts to predict 500m / 1k / 2k / 5k TT times
I used my very recent 500m time, 2:03.6 (2:03.6), and a 5km time, 24:15.9 (2:25.) (Oct. 2), to predict a 2k and it came up with 9:09.1 (2:17.3). No way! A couple of days ago, I did an interval session of 4X3' 2' mr, averaging 2:17.3/500m and was really knackered at the end of each interval - althou...
Re: Hydration
I've rowed as long as 100 minutes without hydration (I was well hydrated prior to the row, average pace 1:59.7/500m). For longer rows (or even a shorter row to practice hydrating for a longer row) I hang a camelbak (or similar) with the bite valve hanging next to me. Every 2 to 2.5k, I grab the bite...

Re: HR monitor for PM2
I've got a Model C with PM2, and I'm thinking about ordering a HR monitor from C2. Do I just order the HR chest belt and receiver kit from C2 for $75, and that's all there is to it? Yes. It looks like the strap is the Polar Wearlink that Carl refers to. However, if you want to use a heartrate monit...

Re: Is the Monorail designed to be horizontal ?
The question is that with a spirt level on the monorail it slopes quite significantly towards the flywheel, is this normal? Yes, this is normal. I don't know what the slope is supposed to be, but it should be sloped towards the flywheel, although I would use the term "slightly" rather than "signifi...

Re: Is something wrong
Chris, what drag factor are you using? (Search the forum for drag factor if you don't know how to check.) From your description, it sounds like you may be using a high drag. My understanding is that this will work your arms much more. Many people new to rowing will get better scores with a high drag...

Re: The Pete Plan and working motherhood, is it possible?
Here's a question about interval training. I have a hard time regulating my pace. For the hard intervals I tend to be all or nothing and burnout too fast. Like last night. I put everything into the first 2 500 m pieces, then had nothing left for the last 6. At least I was fast by my standards, 1:56...

Re: Goal Pursuit
100k in 7 (not minutes, but hours). A more immediate goal is to row more than once a week. It will probably take 3 or 4 rows a week to achieve the 100k goal. It would also be nice to get back to sub 7' 2k and 8000+ 30' . Even better would be 16000 in 60' (PB is 15749 nearly 7 years ago).

Re: Excessive drop off?
"Paul's Law", as mentioned, uses a "doubling factor" of 5. This is supposedly (according to Paul Smith) a good balance between strength and endurance for rowing a 2k race. Based on your two distances and times, your "doubling factor" is 5.72 (maybe a bit high, but not unreasonable). If you haven't r...

Re: Training for my first marathon
-You don't need water during a FM, but it won't hurt. Sure, you can survive a FM without drinking water, but you'll be much better off if you do drink. Yesterday I completed a 50k row. The temperature was about 50 F. After I finished my weight was down about a pound, but only because I drank betwee...

Re: Help for beginner
One thing that hasn't been mentioned in all the previous posts is that the seat isn't the optimum shape for most people--it is a compromise that works o.k. for most, but for some it is poor. I never had that kind of problem rowing for 4 years in college (I did have seat issues, but at a different pl...

Re: Online ranking. 5K vs 1K
After hurting my back during my all time PB 500m row nearly 9 years ago, I've tended to avoid the shorter distances (500m, 1k, 2k). I have done a fair number of interval workouts (at least as a percentage of all my erg workouts) the last 5-6 months, but never faster than ~2k pace. It has been years ...

With all due respect, I think Paul's Law is way off and actually would only be true for someone with significantly higher endurance than strength. Within the last two weeks, I have attempted a PR in all three distances and my 500 remains 1:30.5, my 1K is now 3:14.8, and my 2K is 6:56.6 (my first en...

The line of force is from the shoulders, to the hands, to the ends of the oars in the water. John, you obviously don't have any comprehension of simple physics. For the line of force from the shoulder to extend to the ends of the oars in the water , you would have to be swimming and holding onto th...

BTW, does anyone know if we can get our split times for the four 500m intervals of the race? Thanks to danburpee on the UK forum for these links. Thanks David and Michelle for your comments. You're right, I haven't been here for a L_O_N_G while. Back in 2003 I was on pace for 3 million meters (May 1, 2003 to April 30, 2004), but after I got married in October that year, my rowing took a big hit--especially when my rowing machine was relegated...
