Re: Type 2 diabetes and victory
The rule of thumb is that if you lose 20% of your weight, your type 2 diabetes will either go into remission or you will be cured (cured that is if you keep the weight off). Looks like you hit the target! Excellent.

Re:
All I meant was that the drag factor is a more accurate measure of resistance than damper setting. Damper setting will control the drag factor, but if you want to get the same "feel" on two different machines you will want to set their dampers so that they each are reading the same drag factor. Tha...

Re: Leg cramps
Sweating also depletes the body of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium. And as stated drinking too much water will help do the same. Try getting plenty of potassium. You can make a sports drink using two cups of pomegranate juice and two cups of coconut water and drink this before, during...

Re: Model B on craigslist for $495: misleading?
I use a Model B at home. I use a Model D at the Y. The differences are huge. For building muscle, the Model B is the better rower IMO; I like the Model D which is smoother and as mentioned the drag factor is much lower than the lowest on the B.

Re: Difference between damper settings and calories burned
If I burn 300 calories lifting heavy weights, it really exhausts my muscles; if I burn 300 calories riding a bicycle, it is fun; if I burn 300 calories sprinting it hurts; if I burn 300 calories jogging it feels good. I still only burn the same 300 calories even though my muscles feel more exhausted...

Re: New to Rowing...Want to lose 15-20lbs...suggestions?
Hi! I'm brand new. My model E is downstairs and I've loved rowing the last few days. I have a son interested in crew - so we share it. i used to be VERY BIG (325lbs). A strict-Atkins diet dropped me to 199lbs. But I skyrocketed back to 245. About a year and a half ago, I got serious. Cut my refined...

Re: Weight Loss
Other studies show that skipping breakfast or eating a small breakfast can result in overall fewer calories eaten during the day. http://www.nutritionj.com/content/10/1/5/abstract Is this crazy or what?
But might be worth trying?

Re: Weight Loss
It is, unfortunately, simply not a matter of calculating calories out (expended from BMR plus activity level) and eating less (calories in), in order to lose weight. The metabolism will gradually slow to match the lowered calorie intake, resulting in lowered BMR and the dreaded 'plateau' that diete...

Re: Weight Loss
Eat less -- move more. A recent study, I don't have the citation at hand, shows that less calories does more for weight loss than more exercise. From the Ninth Edition, Nutrition for Health, Fitness & Sport, one rule of thumb was to maintain body weight we need to eat 15 times what we weigh in pound...

Re: Mysterious Calorie Burn
A rule of thumb from Ninth Edition, Nutrition for Health, Fitness, & Sport for an active person is:
15 times your weight in pounds equals the number of calories necessary to maintain your weight.
15 times your weight in pounds equals the number of calories necessary to maintain your weight.

Re: Don’t want aerobic exercise; want to tone/build muscle
Steelhead, I'm the total opposite. I'll lift for 20-30 minutes, very short rests, but almost every day. I wish I could do it for more than that, but with three young kids it's hard to find time. I can't lift in early morning either. BP'ing 315 is pretty impressive. What is your body weight? What ki...

Re: Don’t want aerobic exercise; want to tone/build muscle
I typically will row 30 minutes as a warm up, then hit the weights for 3 hours, and then finish with another 30 minute row -- I am not breaking any records on my Model B that is for certain, but what I find interesting is that I can actually row more powerfully after my weight lifting than before (...

Re: Don’t want aerobic exercise; want to tone/build muscle
Hi, my sister had a heart attack and when they put her into rehab, they told her to row; saying this would work her ‘core’. So I bought a rower for myself. I do not need aerobic exercise; I walk four 15 min. miles per day and have done so for years. I love it, am not giving it up, and do not need t...

Re: Tabata training and power lifting
I have now been rowing for a little over three months and I am beginning to learn alot about how my mind and body respond to rowing. I have decided to focus on powerlifting and tabata training. I am going to row four times a week. 2x longer rows and 2x tabata rows. I am also going to lift heavy one...
