Re: Strokes Per Minute
How many SPM do you have to pull to get under 40 minutes. :?: My current 10K SB is 39:17.1 (1:57.8 split) at 22-23spm. In addition to the technique advice (which seems on target) you might consider adopting a structured training plan. You say: I never pull for speed ... If you never pull for speed ...

So: alternating +4 strokes and +8 strokes for 60 minutes might not be overdoing it on the +8 days? Short answer: Probably not. Longer answer: It depends on how fast your fitness is increasing, and for how many weeks you plan to train. Longest answer: I am now in my third season of the WP (a cut-dow...

Re: WP L-4 average strokes vs. total time
So I'm doing one 60 min L-4 and one 40 min L-4 each week. Should the average number of strokes per 10 minutes be higher for the 40 minute session than the 60 minute session since it's shorter? Thanks. Here is an excerpt from Mike Caviston on structuring L4 workouts (emphasis mine): "The rate of inc...

Thanks a lot Toby. I did a 2K time trial last week in 7:44. I'm optimistic that my race time will be better than my practice time. Not to put a damper on enthusiasm, but a 7:38 is 1.5s/500m faster than the 7:44 (which sounds like a big difference to me -- that difference would take me 5-6 weeks of ...

I don't have excel. I was hoping for a more dumbed down version like the running one. Here's what Paul's Law predicts for those who fit the "standard" 5sec/500m increase in split time with every doubling of distance: distance/split relative to 2K 500m/-10 1K/-5 2K/0 5K/+6.6 6K/+7.9 10K/+11.6 HM/+17...

Re: A Rowing calculator to estimate equivalent race performa
Is there a calculator like this for rowing?? There is "Paul's Law." Plug this into Excel: =5*((LN(X/2000))/(LN(2))) Where X=the distance for which you would like to know your predicted split time. Output is the split time difference relative to your 2K time. For instance, if you set X=10000 you wil...

For example, today made an 8K in 30:21 (1:53.8 pace). My last 10K time was 38:18. I have never try a 2K because when I sit in the erg prefer to do long rows. With those times, do you think I can do a 7 minutes 2K right now. I am a 49 years old M, 5'7" with 165 pounds weight. I think you'd be safe t...

Is the overall relationship between distance and pace linear or logarithmic? Who knows?Mike Caviston Mike, don't you think it's pretty clear that the relationship between distance rowed and pace (expressed in sec/m) isn't linear? If it were, then the difference in pace between a 500m and a 2K piece...

Where do you get or how do you generate such a profile? Going from 2K to 5K added 5 seconds to the pace. Doubling the distance from 5K to 10K added 4.8 seconds. Doubling (roughly) the distance from 10K to HM added 6.7 seconds. My conclusion is that the pace (i.e. time per 500 m) is not a logarithmi...

I calculated the pace a little differently than Mike (I think). In Excel I plotted split time as a function of total time spent erging each piece (all expressed in seconds). For example, the 2K split time is 1:52.5 = 112.5s, while it took 7:30 = 450s to row it. The whole data table: distance(m) tota...

Some tips from a previous post by Mike Caviston on structuring the Wolverine Plan (WP) for as few as 4 workouts per week: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER By far the most common question I get regarding the WP is something like, "Okay, I think I understand all this Level 1-2-3-4 business. But how the heck do...
