You know Neil what you say is so important to sustaining ones goals. If we are clear as to what we are trying to achieve, we will remain committed even in the face of disappointment. What helps me and has been very difficult to learn is to do it at the bodies pace / time table. I'm your typical over...

Montan' Yes, and I sympathize, being 44 myself, I find physical deterioration difficult to stomach. I suppose I also feel I've not yet hit my peak, thats my mind talking, my body is not comfortable with the workload though. I remember when I used to cycle I was terrified of being overtaken. I always...

Montan' What is it that you struggle with mentally while erging ? Is it boredom, apprehension or physical fear of over-exertion. I used to get overwhelmed at the thought of anticipating the over-exertion to come, hence now less emphasis on speed. I often watch my little boy aged 3yr running around w...

This love / hate thing you have to conquer. My method was to go strapless and change the PM3 to show calorie counts. No emphasis on pace whatsoever. It was encouraging to note how my calories, lets say I was shooting for 400, would change over distance / time given a lower HR which kept me intereste...

Well thank you Nei. Nice to speak to someone who has made a career out of such an interesting topic. I appreciate the point by point explanation. I'm glad that at the end of the day there IS a logical explanation to all of this and guess that different training methods are perhaps dictated by person...

Caz aerobically I'm with you. I have a chin up bar and a dip bar fixed to my garage wall at home that I use for body weight exercises as well as doing pushups. You only need to do 1 set of each to feel great. I grew up with that routine and have kept it up on and off since then. It reminds me who I ...

Use whatever helps you feel comfortable. A small towel folded over the seat and even 2 small face cloths over the handles for the hands. You'll then be free to concentrate on getting your distance up. The most challenging thing for me when increasing distance is to notice how the core needs strength...

Allright, thanks. I see your point. I suppose every South African wants to run the Comarades - an ultra (96km's I think). Its part of our culture to get up at 5am with a hearty cooked breakfast and watch the poor bastards the whole day, especially those that don't make the line 12 hrs later ... If t...

I found the athletics stadium quite strenuous just from the gentle bends, even when swapping around to go the other way. My shoes are Nike Air (BRS 1000) which I was recommended to use as I'm flat footed ... I've got 2 questions for the runners : 1) Will it help to use a treadmill, and for what perc...

I don't follow this low milage theory. My body can only extend itself lets say 30 % further than what I consistently train at and then my recovery from the effort is extended ie the performance is unrepeatable until my base training can work its way up to that level. I find the challenge as stated a...

Arnold Schwantzenegger always said the body cycles weight loss. You may see no progress for 2 weeks and then BAM, a new you ! I've found you need to concentrate on the basics and let the body sort itself out. I don't follow people who recommend deleting healthy food like rice, potatoes from ones die...

My personal experience is long 1 hr 30 min sessions done at a pace you can communicate at give the most fat loss. I've always exercised using HIT and never felt the same benefit for fat loss. My feeling is that the body prioritizes immune system recovery over fat loss after HIT, whereas if you train...

The thing I found out was I felt like I was low on sugar after an hour. Make sure the rooms not too hot cause that affects you a lot. There's nothing to be scared of if you're not going all out. I put a small towel on the seat for padding, it helps. You'll regain a lot of comfort from cycling your e...
