Re: WattBike
Huh... so it has an awful lot of C2 technology (or a very uncanny facsimile), is sold by C2 in the UK and other places, but sold by somebody else in the US. I wonder why they didn't just make it a C2 product... Maybe the C2 name was just too connected to rowing, and they thought a different distribu...

Re: Mile for Mike
All of the copious advice on this forum, the US and UK training guides, are geared towards a 2k race (the standard C2 and Olympic race distance) but it should be good enough for a few weeks of training, even if yours is a mile instead.

Re: Recommendations on how to get started?
Wow... that C2 is pretty much brand new (I row about that much in a single workout), and that's a killer deal for it! The only maintenance I imagine it might possibly need in the near future is a new shock cord, since the one you have is simply old. (Elastic loses it's stretch over time, even withou...

Re: What's Considered good?
I just thought I would point out that in the Wolverine Plan (kind of the "poster child" for restricted-rate rows), gives only vague general guidelines for spm for anything BUT the extended-length workouts. The plan specifically says to let the spm develop naturally for the faster, shorter, pieces. T...

Re: What's Considered good?
For the low-rate workouts, you aren't thinking long enough (or slow enough)... to take the Wolverine plan as an example; the rate-restricted workouts are 40-70 minutes of work time... way more than a 6k. If you consult the Wolverine Plan pace chart, a 16SPM 2' work subsection (the absolute lowest sp...

Re: What's Considered good?
Cyclingman... I don't think anybody is suggesting you attempt to do a PB 2k at 21.5spm. No proponents of low-rating training advocate going at a low rating while you race, or try for a PB time. The low-rating rows are supposed to be used for the longer, slower, workouts.

Re: Smart Marathon Training (Running)
I think a lot depends on your goals. Rowing exercises a lot of muscles that aren't used in running. Some of these are used somewhat in quality running (such as the quads, which are also the main muscle group exercised with cycling.) Some of the rowing muscles have less to no use in running; the core...

Re: Your height, and Concept 2 (good for tall people)?
If you want to be extra safe... To check, just sit comfortably on the seat, put your feet on the stretchers, and slide your legs to full extension; you don't even need to grab the handle. It doesn't matter how good your technique is or isn't... fully extended legs are fully extended legs; you'll eit...

Re: Your height, and Concept 2 (good for tall people)?
Although I'm only 6'2", I also have a 36-inch inseam. I'm just fine. You may want to simply visit a gym with a Concept2 (they almost all do) and double-check that you are okay.

Re: Can I Really Train Smarter, Not Harder?
I believe current physiological theory says that fully developing the aerobic system requires long (30+ minute) workouts at substantially less than maximum effort. You should still be working up a sweat, but not putting every last ounce into it either. This is supposed to help you build carbohydrate...

Re: What's Considered good?
Those times look pretty good to me... My medium-term goal (likely still months away) is to pull a sub-40 10k. In any case, the easiest comparisons are done at the 2k distance, since that is the piece all erg competitions are run at, many rowing races, and is, by far, the most popular ranking distance.

Re: Indoor Rowers - Concept2 - Resistance
cwfreake, To answer your actual question: yes. The rower takes the current flywheel resistance into account when calculating your pace, so your resistance setting is already "baked in" to your speed, no matter what you set the damper to. This value, called the "drag factor" is re-calculated on every...

I'll never complain about the C2 seat again
Until yesterday, I've agreed with the posters that think the C2 seat is not as comfy as it could be. Well, yesterday I borrowed a bike from a friend (just a cheap-o Schwinn she had bought for her son) and biked across the Golden Gate bridge. It's not a tough ride; about 7-8 miles from the SF waterfr...

Re: Need clarification on SPM
From personal experience, however, don't try and lower your rate too fast. Lower ratings (while maintaining the same pace) puts more strain on your muscles. If you up that strain too quickly, you can put some real hurt on your back. Somebody as fit as yourself should easily be able to do a much bett...
