Need encouragement
Well, I was doing really well with my rowing, and on June 19 I had an emergency appendectomy. Recovery has been slow because I was so sick before the surgery was done, and worst of all I have strict instructions not to do any ab work ("that means rowing," said surgeon, in case I was confused) for 6 ...

#80
I finally online ranked myself. I'm #80 in my age group for the 5000! I think this will continue to improve as I started at #97 last week and have been steadily moving up. And in 6 mo, I move into the next age group...yippee! I am not getting to row every single day, but am really pleased with how s...

Update
Hey - thanks everyone for all the encouragement. I am slowly increasing my distance and now comfortably rowing 4500-5000. I can row 4500 in about 20 minutes. Each time I row my time drops by 15-45 seconds...I'm not killing myself trying to go faster, but I think it is just an indicator that I'm gett...

Progress report
I had to take almost 10 days off this month because of two separate illnesses (thank you to my kid), but having a C2 in the house really helps. I have been rowing 4000s trying to improve my time a little. This week I rowed 5x and dropped my total time by almost a minute. I am now pretty consistent w...

I did it
I caved and bought a C2 for home. I just can't get to the gym often enough and deal with the baby - I have her alone every morning and that is when I have time to work out. This morning while she napped, I rowed. After rowing the C2s at my gym, and my 15-year-old one at my beach house, this one was ...

Explanation of name!
"Heifer" comes from my college crew experience. I rowed for a very good women's crew and a lot of the rowers called each other "Heifer" when they were freshmen. I'm not sure how it got started, but it doesn't have as much of a negative connotation for me as you might think....

Update
On my 11th day of rowing I have gotten to 53,000 meters...I think if I had started on time (Thanksgiving) I would actually have had a prayer of getting to 100,000 by Christmas, but didn't start until 12-11. I am feeling better and better during 20+ minutes of rowing, and already feel significantly s...

blisters :(
The rate limiting step right now is blisters :( I have been rowing pretty much every day (6 days out of 7) and today had to stop after 2500 m because my hand was so sore. Have people had luck with tape, or gloves, or what? I'm not so used to those rubberized handles...not to sound retro, but when I ...

Thanks, that was going to be my next question. I am currently rowing 4500 in 21:15 or so. I was wondering about just trying to row longer and longer versus doing intervals. Then again, because time is so short, for now I was thinking I would try to get up to 30 minutes, then 40 without stopping and ...

Right now, pretty much just erging, because of my time constraints. But I think running and swimming are nice complements for rowing. When I was actually rowing, back in the day, I liked weight circuits too - done briskly enough to be aerobic. I would do something like 50 seconds on, 10 seconds off ...

New & looking for encouragement
Hi all, I'm a new mama who is about 30 lbs heavier than she would like to be :) despite regular trips to the gym. I used to row in college (I'm almost 40 now) and had stayed away from the erg because I am so far from that level of fitness now that it makes me depressed to use it :). However, I'm des...
