I agree with Shinjin, your quickest way to improve would be to work on pacing your piece more evenly. Because of the non-linear energy requirements for faster splits, you are wasting a lot of energy. Also you are likely building extra lactate early by going hard your first 500M making you less effic...

I think you should work on getting more comfortable at *higher* ratings. I would not increase the resistance setting on the damper. My reason for suggesting a simple 500M piece is that you already have other training with your team. If you can pull 1:59 comfortably for 500M after an intense workout ...

How did you feel after your 8:02? "Pretty Tired", "Completely Wiped Out?" "Falling off the Erg and couldn't get back up?" It doesn't seem like you are that far off from you goal, and it may simply be an issue of "toughness" during your official erg test. Your body may be capable of a 7:57 right now!...

If I were you, I would still approach my coach and ask him for advice. Part of being a "great coach" is being able to provide appropriate feedback even in the face of a large squad. He should still be able to give you 5 minutes of his time and suggest appropriate workouts. Alternately get a group of...

At exactly the 6 minute and 30 second mark, I felt defeated by this machine; my heart was pounding and my lungs were out of breath. At 10 minutes even I dismounted the C2, and when I stood up I felt a wobbliness in my thighs that reminded me of the feeling I used to get from doing barbell squats. T...

Your forearms getting tired so quickly makes it seem like you are gripping the handle too hard. You should try to relax more. I would suggest an experiment where you row legs only for a bit. Hold the arms outstretched and use them in like a cable. You shouldn't be expending much effort in your forea...

That doesn't sound like a hydration/fluid intake problem. Do you warm up at all? Do you cough, or gag or have any other trouble breathing? If you get to that point, stop rowing and drink right away do you feel better? Do you sweat much? Is it really spit from your mouth you feel like you're choking ...

Re: General advice on lowering splits
I've long been under the impression that I can't pull as hard because I'm not big enough, but even so, there must be more that I can do to get faster. Any suggestions? I think a big problem is you've got a mental block. I'm 5'7" , was 68kg in college and pulled 1:54's for 5K back in the day. Years ...

For some reason I cannot drink while rowing. How do other people do that? My rationale was that giving up a couple minutes taking quick breaks to drink was a better option than risking not finishing because of dehydration. [/quote] I'm thinking about doing a marathon and I've been trying to figure ...

Just out of curiosity, at what RPM do you cycle? Also do a search on breathing. There are a lot of treads on it. I started cycling at 80 to 85 for the first 2 minutes, then went up to 90 rpm, which is fairly similar to what I do when I cycle outside. I have the feeling the lactic acid buildup in my...

Finished my first full marathon. 3:06:32.2 Was drinking about every 2500M, but ran out of water nearby with 10K to go. Decided not to risk tightening up if I got off the erg. Next time I'll be better prepared. Drank 48 oz, but finished off 3 pounds lighter than when I started. Looks like I should pl...

Ah, so it's not really traveling along the floor? A couple of strategically placed 20kg weight plates should stop the lift. I have had to move it to butt up against a wall to stop it sliding across the floor. You produce more power than me, so my solution may not work for you, but I have at...

Re: Off Topic
Sorry for wasting everyones time. I found the discussion useful. I routinely do 2K pieces where I start off at ~2:00 and bring the pace down below 1:50 for the last 500M. I understood that this wasn't optimal in terms of "time" before this discussion, but now I know that looking at the average Watt...

If one did a 100Wx5 min/300Wx5 min piece as I proposed, what does the PM report as the average wattage? I'm guessing that it'll report the 181.7 which Paul computed, and not the 200 Watts which is the time averaged power. Again I need to check more data. I think this makes sense, even if it is count...
