I've been using chest straps for years, Polar, Garmin... I just purchased a COOSPO H808S and it works great; synchs up with the PM2 and Ergdata immediately, no spit required :D

You might try putting a bit more power into each stroke. Lower stroke rates aren't necessarily easier. dutchcantoo, As far as headaches, I've found they're more related to dehydration than efforts. You might want to look at your water intake, along with electrolytes.
