Re: Polar OwnIndex Test
Interesting article. The same page had a link to another article about the benefits of HR training, using the 220-age formula. http://www.nytimes.com/1998/07/02/technology/downtime-tracking-the-heart-to-train-the-body.html?src=pm I agree that resting HR is not an absolute measure of fitness. Clearly...

I did Tabatas for a while, and I was able to get the HR up very close to max, but it depended a lot on the warmup. For example, if I'd done a reasonably hard 30 minute row before the Tabatas, then by the 8th rep I'd be within a couple of beats of max. However, with a short-ish warmup (say 5km) the h...

I had 2 totally unsuccessful 10' sessions (and a drive-by--I got to the gym parking lot and kept going) over the last week. The only reason I was able to erg today was I have a goal of 1m meters since Dec. 4th (when I got my log card) and should be able to reach it by Monday at the latest. Then erg...

Perhaps it has something to do with multiple sessions on the same day. When the logcard utility was changed back in August to include time stamps with the date info, the "meters per day" calculation started counting each workout as a different day, because they all had unique time stamps. My guess i...

I don't know much about others experiences have had after doing 20 sessions of the protocol. Mike? I think the Tabatas contributed to new 500m, 1000m, and 2000m PBs, but like Rich I thought my endurance work was suffering. By mid-January I felt tired most of the time. Eventually I cut back on the T...

However, I find it interesting that three of the winning photos were tagged "inspiration" by the submitters, but C2 decided to choose two of those and put them in the "art" and "intensity" categories. Sort of twisted your rules a little bit. My only complaint is that C2 completely ignored the origi...

Re: WP Level 4 Helpline -
I actually wiped the chain down with WD-40 on a towel a few wks. ago, and the amount of dirt coming off was unbelievable. I got in trouble here for offering advice on a topic it turned out I knew nothing about, but I do know that WD-40 is not a lubricant, and should not be used on the chain. You ne...

HR based training is not based on acheiving your MHR. It is based on acheiving various percentages of VO2max or lactate levels, and using HR as an non-invasive indicator of these levels. Thanks for the information. I feel foolish for responding to a question I obviously wasn't qualified to answer, ...

Re: It will be slightly lower, but not significantly
To the poster who says MHR is always the same, this may be a semantics debate--what exactly do we mean when we use the term "Maximum Heart Rate?" The reality is that every form of exercise uses a different set of muscles, and some exercises require the heart to push more oxygen into more muscles th...

Perhaps I don't understand your question, but if it's really about max HR, then the activity is irrelevant. Your MHR when running will be your MHR when erging. No, on the erg it should be slightly lower then running. Swimming it will be lower yet I understand that with similar effort your HR may be...

I was going to suggest that you could use the whey powder as fertilizer if the melamine content is high enough, but I decided against posting if all I could offer was a smartass remark. However, now that you mention peanut butter and rice, I can recommend an alternative that your wife may (or may no...
