see a doctor
You may have jock itch causing the rash. I think it's definitely worth checking out with a doctor - basically a fungal infection under the arm. If that's the case, believe me you don't want to let it go for very long. Make sure that you are washing your workout shirts in strong detergent and in very...

2 cents
For what it's worth, my old rowing coach saw no benefit in those types of easy & long rows. Might help for weight loss though if that's the idea.

cover everything on the monitor but the stroke rate
This is what I've seen done. It is a good way to simulate the boat with a cox and keeps you from getting too close to fly and die.

pushing not pulling
I don't know if this is obvious, but it helped me in the first days to really think of this as a pushing exercise rather than a pulling one. That mindset keeps the focus on the legs. While on this topic, there have been postings here that show that the erg emphasizes the upper body more than on the ...

stroke rate
You really want to think about the stroke as a push rather than a pull. This thinking puts the focus on the leg drive rather than the upper body pulling the chain. It sounds to me like you don't have much in your leg drive. For most people with a steady strong drive through the legs, maintaining a 3...

feet
A friend of mine rowed for Oxford. He emphasized pushing off the balls of your feet on the drive.

post a video? xeno dvd?
If you can, post a video clip on this site and you should get some good tips. I have seen several people do this before with lots of feedback. I've also heard (though I haven't bought one) that the Xeno rowing instruction DVD's are excellent.

thanks
Thanks for the advice. The tight grip also explains my blisters when on the water. I'll give it a try tonight.

stroke rate problem
I typically row at a 22 or 23 and have no problem slowing the stroke rate down (within reason) and maintaining the same pace by altering recovery time or adding a little power. However, when I take the rate up to say a 26, the pace inevitably picks up. I know that you are supposed to be able to main...

watts
I'm not sure I buy the idea that watts are a better measure of how much "work" or "extra work" your body must do to reach a goal. True, they are a measure of output, but I think what you are speaking about is an idea of additional effort required. For instance, in moving from producing 10 to 20 watt...

Good point - I guess I meant mostly getting a decent reach at the catch which involves some pivot at the compression point. A lot of time off the water and I find my stroke is effectively shorter. While I'm on this point, it would also be cool to have a handle on the erg that somehow allowed you to ...

slippery handle
When I do longer pieces on the erg I tend to sweat quite a bit. I didn't really have this problem on the model C, but on my model D, the sweaty hands make the erg handle very slippery. Anyone who has pulled hard and had the handle slip out and have you shoot back in mid stroke knows it's no fun (and...
