Max HR

Frequent exercisers have hearts like much younger men. Some doctors will take what your max HR is and tell you that you have the heart of a much younger man. Off and on the past two years I have hit 175 HR near the end of a moderately hard 2k, on purpose, as I accelerated the last 500m. I'm breathin...

Max HR is exercise dependent, based on many studies. So folks who erg a lot will with both long "slow", and hard interval training, have very healthy hearts like young fit men. Their max HR will be off the charts for their age. The majority of heart patients are elderly, and don't exercise much. I w...

The EEG shows the proper pattern for a fully functioning heart muscle. Most likely the small heart attack left some dead tissue, so the muscle electrical pattern is no longer standard. A sonogram would give a picture of the heart and would reveal just what bit of tissue died. Nice that it is a just ...

consider a light grip on the recovery

Try gripping hard only when pulling, and relax your grip on the slide forward.

You can even open your fingers slightly on the recovery, and only maintain grip with your palm and thumb.

There is no need for an iron grip for 7 minutes or whatever your 2k time is.

Suunto cheap ?

I looked at a few inexpensive Polars two years ago, and was disappointed. I decided on a Suunto T4 with the coach module. They are a bit battery sensitive, but I like it very much. Seems very solid, not cheap in any way. I've sent it back twice for in warranty repair, and they took care of it prompt...

I'm not sure what a valve can and cannot recover from. My last stress test in October 2007 showed I did have a small amount of regurgitation, but I don't feel it a bit. When it did bother me, they said it was just a 1 on a scale of 5, mild. But recover it did, from two different things. Rest and gra...

MVP and exercise

My symptom with MVP of too much exercise was that one is breathing harder than you should be for the amount of work you are doing. If the valve is altered such that it can not heal itself, you are stuck with it. I did not have a prolapse, but regurgitation due to 1) infection, and 2) valve strain. F...

in cardiac rehab, 5K takes me 30+ minutes cruising, and handle pressure is not that light, and I need to keep my HR under control. At 73, her max HR is supposed to be 20 points below mine. When I am doing cooldown after intervals, I am rowing at 15 spm and the rate is about 6:00+ @ 500m. Seems impos...

When returning/lowering the weight, slow down. About a 6 second return stimulates muscle growth at a faster pace. I just found this a few days ago on a research website.

Depends on frequency of really hard workouts. I would think a max of two a week, and not back to back. Every really tough workout earns a light workout afterwards, and occasionally a day off the 2nd day after.

I just read a research study recently on www.pubmed.gov, which stated that there is a lot of nutrition to be had from the pulp of fruit that is discarded from juicing. Sounds like making smoothies in a blender is better, to not lose any nutrients. Sorry to not include the link. There is a lot of stu...

Taking into account all the other good advice provided, consider varying the three workouts a bit, so one or two are more moderate and consistent, and the third you push harder, or actually do some very hard interval training with active rest. I do a lot of this. Bob S' recommendation of 6-18-6 is v...

Incredible tbartman. Next get together, see if you can get folks to talk while on a long walk. Speed unimportant. Distance from the food is. You might tell the family you have developed a food allergy to rich foods. You sort of have anyway. If nothing else, ask then to keep things away from you. You...

May be a muscle imbalance thing. Years ago when I ran more, my ankles cracked every step. Sounded like I was Hansel dropping ball bearings every step. Especially irritating in a swimming pool, when someone is under water. Much louder. I've never had it looked at, and I, too, sometimes need to flex t...

Soak your elbows deep in cold water with ice cubes.
That is afterwards, not before you row.
