Re: Drop off in 2k performance when targeting longer stuff
By the way, I think this unusual mixture of endurance and strength makes rowing such a beautiful sport. It's as if two opposing forces need to be balanced in such a way not to hamper each other, which creates a unique type of athleticism

Re: Drop off in 2k performance when targeting longer stuff
I'd say in most endurance-based sports, there is a large carry over between distances. For example, being a better half-marathon runner makes you a better 5k runner (though if you focus on 5k more you'd improve more). The energy systems transfer really well for anything HM and below, perhaps down to...

Re: Row / Erg in morning vs evening performance
I much prefer rowing (or running) soon after I wake up on empty stomach. It's really strange because I'm absolutely not a morning person. I feel groggy for quite a while if I don't exercise in the morning, but once I get going 5-10 mins into it everything just clicks nicely and afterwards I feel ene...

Re: Maximum heart rate changes
What i'm saying is that untrained muscle fatigue occurs early and pushing as hard as you can can result in a max of say 180. However when trained, and stronger the ability to reach the true max of say 190 is there. I experienced this last year on switching from rowing to cycling. My rowing max was ...

Re: Maximum heart rate changes
I have observed this many times in my training cycles. I used to run a lot and had a number of longer on and off periods. Most of the time I wear a HR monitor and here is my personal observation. There is around 10-12 bpm difference between my high-level trained/fit state and when I start training ...

Re: Benchmark to determine if established aerobic base?
Yes, I completely agree. It's about the balance, whatever that is for every individual. I was doing 9-10 hrs per week (rowing and a little lifting) at one point in November/December and now had to dial it down to 6-7 as I can't afford to spend that much time (and energy) during my daily routine on t...

Re: Benchmark to determine if established aerobic base?
Good point about it not being pristine metrics. I read somewhere that the speed work gains will last around 7-8 days (I have no idea where I read it, and it may be totally wrong, but for some reason it stuck with me!). In these days of base building, assuming there is no rush to get to a test or ra...

Re: Benchmark to determine if established aerobic base?
Excellent advice (and article). The 80% is a bit of a guesswork, especially because there are different ways to measure it, one being HR, the other being time, and this is also mentioned in the article. For instance, even when you are doing short VO2max a considerable portion of your HR will be in a...

Re: Benchmark to determine if established aerobic base?
I should probably also add that VO2 max doesn't improve for a certain portion of the population (can't quite remember but around 10% I believe) regardless of how much training is done at top intensities, which has to do with genetics.

Re: Benchmark to determine if established aerobic base?
Yes, Maffetone recommends long (many months of) aerobic base training before anything else and he also excludes weight lifting until aerobic base is established. I don't remembering him saying anything about reaching a plateau, but it's been a while I read it. I remember reading elsewhere that it ta...

Re: "You can stop rowing now..."
This is truly inspiring! I am curious, how long have you been rowing, if I may ask?
