Mike wrote: I’ve calculated all the paces in Watts just to make things more challenging and to keep from having to see slower paces than I’m used to. To keep the math simple, I set 16spm @ 50% of 2K Watts and increased Watts by 3% for every spm (so 17spm = 53% of 2K Watts, 18spm = 56%, etc.) The ac...

Re: After workout eats/drinks
When Carmichael uses the term "different mechanisms to transport" is he referring to the specific enzymes used in the metabolism of each of the different saccharides? If so, there is one particular one that has often been ignored in these discussions and that is the amylase found in saliva. As far ...

Re: After workout eats/drinks
Believe it or not there is a great deal of scientific research which has gone into answering your very question. Ralph, Based on what you've read, how much importance do you place on the 4:1 carb:protein ratio and how valuable do you think specially formulated sports drinks are? Tom From what I hav...

Re: After workout eats/drinks
I have been thinking about nutrition, and a lot of people have told me what you put into your body in the first 20-30min after a hard workout is one of the most important things about the workout and the recovery afterwords. What do you all eat/drink directly after a hard workout on the erg/boat/we...

Dr. Ralph: Thanks. I am going to talk to my Doc again. I left a message with his assistant and he may not have gotten the gist of what I was asking. He seems reluctant to take me off the beta blockers, which I'm on solely for high BP ... from about 10 years ago ... when I was not as fit as I am now...

Jim: What's frustrating is not knowing how much, or when, they have an effect. For example, today I'm not sure I could have driven the heart rate much more above 141. It was about 90 minutes after taking my meds. I see an entry in last year's log, when I was keeping track of when I did a workout du...

Perhaps to better explain some of the points I have been trying to make I would like to describe my recent personal experiences. At 65 my observed maximum HR is 167. I observed this on several occasions after an all out 2k one of which was at last years Crash-B were I set a personal best. The other ...

Re: Good/Bad/Indifferent
I can now see that the first statement I referred to was not a typo and this last gem is one of the same as your previous claim and is the type of crap that is thrown around on the net all to often. I'm sorry but you are clearly wrong and I must correct you before more than you believe this. Max HR...

Thanx Ralph. After a 2k, "post-exercise lactate levels of 16 to 21 millimoes per liter in the arterial blood; and a blood pH between 7.0 and 6.85, the limit of physiologically tolerable acidosis" according the "Rowing Faster." By way of comparison, as a rule, UT2 and UT1 endurance work is done at b...

Re: Good/Bad/Indifferent
The maximum heart rate is the maximum that your heart can beat to meet the maximum oxygen demand of your body. Any effort that exceeds your maximum heart rate is anaerobic. I stopped reading your input when I read that misinformation. Hope it was a typo and you can clear it up. Geoff. My apologies ...

Re: Rate Recovery
Ragiarn— Are you saying that working at AT levels helps increase the intensity at which one can work before lactate accumulates in the body and that AT training also conditions the body deal w/ lactate? According to the authors of the book “Rowing Faster,” the way to increase the point at which lac...

Wow! Thanks Ralph and others for the most informative thread I've come across in a long time. I haven't looked at the references yet but look forward to going throught them. Much of what you've told us confirms what I've either suspected or read, but it's great to have so much information in one pl...

Re: Rate Recovery
Doc: After my workout this afternoon, I took time and read your first link. I had just finished (less than 10 minutes) a 12K piece at 2:05, I wanted to get a handle on my heart rate recovery. So I fished the heart rate monitor out of its original packing and strapped it on and got back on the erg. ...

Re: Lance and specificity
OK, you would develop him through trainign and teaching - but don't forget - we began this comparing his physiology developed after many years of cycling to his rowing potential. Consider the article quoted in the post I made today on the blog - which showed huge improvements for Lance - and that w...
