Competitions

I went by myself to my first race and feel I would have done better with some support. There was so much happening that was unfamiliar. I could have used someone to keep an eye on the race and to offer encouragement. I did notice in other races the cox was more shouting and urging that could be dist...

Mark,
Thanks for the kind words. This was the "Brighton Burn Ergatta", a yearly event in Rochester New York that caters to the local college and high school crowd. Of 16 events, only the last 3 involved anyone over 30 years old.

I'm still pretty pumped about my result. I did everythi...

Training

I never competed before today and usually go for the long, slow row. I never timed myself for a 2K or even 500 meters for that matter either. I was really trying to go sub 8 minutes. Having never rowed a sub 2 minute 500 before, I thought this would be an accomplishment.

So today, at my f...

Competitions

I'm going to go for 310K for the month, but there will be days I take off, so the trick will be to sprinkle 6 off days to do the 310K in 25 sessions.

I don't know if there's a website, but you can contact Lori Gilley at 585-461-1051. She's one of the primary race organizers. I'm sure there will be walk-in registration available. Races start at 10am and conclude around 2:30.
Kim

Training

I'm going to my first competition this Saturday in Rochester New York. Mostly I want to observe others to pick up some pointers, but I'll also be doing a 1K in the veterans category. If any regular readers of this forum are going, let me know so we might arrange to meet.
Kim

John,
I think I understand the arithmetic and I want to ask about the interpretation. If I look at the calculations my 2K percentage is about 75.4%. My one (and only, so far) marathon worked out to 76.5%

I can see the value of monitoring these numbers as a means of gauging improvemen...

Had the day off with some time to spare so I went for 50k meters. Felt good for most of it but clearly ran out of gas around 45K. Toughed it out and am headed for a shower and a nap
Kim

For no particular reason I set a goal for last week of 100K. Made that one. On my way to my first million by end of March (started 12/1/05)
Kim

Training

Hi folks,
I'm going to a local ERGatta in early March, mostly to watch other people row and pick up some pointers on how I can improve. For my age group, the only competition is a 1K. Right now, I'm on a self-set mission to finish 1000k my the end of March so most of my workouts are 15-20k at a...

General

Even in my basement in winter (about 56 degrees farenheit) I sweat a lot after the first 20 minutes go by. This doesn't bother me a bit. In fact, in summer, the temp hits 80 and the workout feels about the same except that the sweating starts earlier. A fan is ok but I don't care for a direct wind b...
