One other factor regarding comparability ....

Peter H. would have had to row for an extra 20 seconds to row a 5-40 2K on a Concept 2. His average 566 watts would probably have been less if the effort required an extra 20 seconds worth of rowing.

Kinley,

I wholeheartedly agree that there should be races offered across a wider spectrum of distance. The "monomania" of 2K is because this is the ONLY distance accepted for national / international championships. Blame Concept 2 - not me or other forum users.

The issue is the...

Yes, this is how world class, full-time, professional rowers do.

Loads and loads of distance work, gradually increasing intensity for 10 months of the year, followed by a few weeks of sharpening prior to the main competitive event.

Standard stuff really.

It's most of...

hjs,

European standards in distance running have also declined.

How many European male athletes ran sub 28 minutes last year for 10K?
Very few!! Sub 28 was commonplace in the 1970's when athletes trained by running large volumes (& we are not talking about running the mil...

hjs,

Quite the reverse!!

Times of UK & USA distance runners have DECLINED since the 1970's and 1980's as more 'scientific' training programmes have been adopted.

The most notable UK / USA exception is Paula Radcliffe who regularly logs 120 to 140 miles per week inclu...

Just a quick correction regarding Lydiard for Mr. 135 ....

Lydiard's base training period (usually 12-14 weeks) involved 1 long run of 2 hrs. plus (typically 22 miles over very demanding terrain) and 2-3 runs per week of 1.5 hours (typically 15-16 miles). No run was shorter than 60 minute...

Jim quoted " but it is also recognized that the long term studies on a Lydiard approach has never been done. You just see it in the medals, but oddly not in the lab."

I think I would prefer to see the medals than the "scientific" reasoning.

When - but I very much doubt it will ...

Jim,

Excellent article. Website now amongst my 'favourites'.

Quote (from article): "Most of these performances were fueled by a high volume of training. In 1986, Mark Nenow ran 10,000 meters in 27:20. Nenow’s training was almost entirely volume based. His time stood as the Amer...

Just to add my observations to this debate ............

Whilst not advocating the kinds of volume that Ranger cites, I think there is considerable merit in his premise that daily training should be based on long, continuous rowing at low intensity to create both physical conditioning and ...
