Re: help with Odd lactate testing results
So: a couple of questions: 1. Why does my lactate spike then start to drop despite higher workloads? 2. Can I really have this crappy an aerobic engine??? I am certain I could suffer through a 2:55 marathon on the erg tomorrow if I had to. 3. Any predictions regarding what my actual 2mmolL pace is ...

Re: HR training and rest periods
Hi Paul, I can't get access to the article but just on what you have mentioned: .....[snip]..... he suggest work to rest ratios of 1:3 for AT (AN?), 1:2 for TR and 1:1 for AT. On face value, I would suggest that AT training could be done with shorter rests but for AN and TR, I could see these ratios...

Sounds great Byron but isn't the water still cold?Byron Drachman wrote:Two days ago I was wearing pogies and was bundled up. Suddenly it got warm. The pontoons for cold water safety come off tomorrow.

Re: Realistic improvement in older athletes?
I am the lab rat. 45 min is a 10K row at 2:15/500m. I could see maybe a 40 min 10K. 147 5k so 151 ish for the 10k is possible, 2.00 you can do including few coffee breaks  That is true but I am not advocating 45' at 2:15 - way too slow for you. I would suggest 45' at a firm pace around 1:51is...

Re: Realistic improvement in older athletes?
I'm not drinking the Kool-Aid regarding HIT vs LSD training. I just brought that subject up because a large percentage of commenters seem to think that mega-mileage is the end all, be all of training. I merely point that there is ongoing debate about the proper mix of training. I'm really not all t...

Re: Realistic improvement in older athletes?
The thing that I find compelling is that the reduced training time has to cut down on the over all fatigue, although the high intensity is more tiring on a per unit of time basis. Fatigue is a big factor for older athletes. I agree about the fatigue factor for older athletes. Here is another articl...

Re: Realistic improvement in older athletes?
RE: the topic of mega miles. I recall numerous studies conducted by exercise physiologists decades ago that showed that interval (high intensity) training of relatively lesser cumulative miles could accomplish as much as slogging through mega miles. Maybe others are aware of those experiments and c...

Re: Realistic improvement in older athletes?
I feel that training for 2K on a rower is not going to require mega-meters. I'm not sure what mix of workouts I'm going to come up with. I agree sharpening is not appropriate - I'm not there yet. At this point, I intend to focus on sub race pace intervals, both short and longer ones and tempo rows ...

Re: Realistic improvement in older athletes?
Cyclingman - For what it's worth I think that you could improve. As people have said, your CV engine likely wont improve much but there are two areas which you could work on; Lactate Threshold and Efficiency. These are sport specific, so even though you are good on the bike, it will likely take time...

If you're thinking NE2KC Raoul, then no. Unfortunately you'll have to try to get here in person.
Too bad - I have another commitment or I would be there
Looking forward to your write-up.

Re: Overtraining?
Having gotten back into the erg a week ago from a 9 month layoff and 30 lbs. my split times and/or endurance are getting worse instead of better. Is this a sign of overtraining? Started out with a 5k, then to 30 minutes, then 40 minutes. 9 workouts in 12 days, 55000 meters @ 75% or better HR. I'm t...

Simply not true as all your training does not support this claim!
You have made numerous assertions that your AT is 172. Now it has gone to 180. So what has changed?ranger wrote:AT for me is 180 bpm.
