CTC Challenge

I agree with the thought that shorter distances will likely encourage multiple attempts to improve ones scoring times. I know that for the 500 (I think we done the 500 twice this year), I have pulled multiple rows at the same sitting. Tom, I guess warm-up and cool-down meters can be added to keep yo...

Nonathlon Updates - Late Summer Doldrums

To My UNM Team Mates: This has been a challenging time for my personal rowing and time available to commit to updating our team results (business trips, heat, vacation/business trips, etc.). I have updated the Nonathlon Results as of September 18. 2006. We have new additions to the 900 Club (Bonnie...

Heart Rate and Weight Loss

DJ: I checked through my reference files to locate the Karvonen Heart Rate Calculator recommended by one of our rowing physician team mates. The link provides suggested HR targets for weight loss and improved athletic performance. I hope that this helps. Rick http://www.briancalkins.com/HeartRate.htm

Addictions - Nonathlon

Gustaaf: I agree with your "addiction analogy" with Nonathlon. I am 40 points behind you, but, I love the ability to focus on which segments are substandard and where I have excelled. I check Nonathlon 2 - 3 times a week to see how everyone is progressing and our participation continues to grow! Bon...

Drag Factor for Sprints

Tom B: We have talked about a shortened stroke (leg drive) for optimum sprint performance (500m). As I've seen wide variations in damper settings to drag factors, what kind of drag factor do you use for the sprints? I generally use a sprint damper setting of 5 or 6 (drag factor without C-Breeze is 1...

Heart Rate, Pace and Weight Loss

DJ: I have only been rowing about a year (2,500,000 meters) and I focused on losing weight dropping 30 lbs in the first six months. I have always used a HR monitor for recordkeeping, but, I haven't used it to limit my pace. I used www.fitday.com to monitor my diet reducing calories to 2000 - 2100/da...

Sprint Stroke & Butt Slide

Dr. Kev: I was reading the through the training forum regarding stroke rates for short distance sprints to find that many rowers have 60 - 80 SPM's. In trying to replicate these speeds and SPM, one can only conclude that there is either no leg action (locked legs and using arms/back only) or reduced...

Bonus Points

just an observation....something to take into consideration for when all 10 legs of Nonathlon are completed (I hope I achieve it some day): If someone has 100 points in the '+' column it means they have completed all 10 events - only the top "9" scores are counted to your total, but you get a bonus...

Photographs and Such

Tom: My mom has had the photography bug for the last 50+ years. When I grew up, we had a darkroom in the back of the office with all kinds of neat chemicals and paper and red lights (Oops! that might mean something unintended now). She started with an old Pentax 35mm box camera and everything was bl...

Meters Board, Motherhood and Apple Pie

Tom: I'll capture the thoughts about the team meters board and calendar from Free Spirits to talk with Bill Patton. I am traveling for a few days, so I'll likely wait until I return next week Thursday to move ahead. I'm glad to see you have returned from "the cabin" and the I hope you are not too an...

Team Statistics Pages - a la Free Spirits

Tom: I think you have an excellent idea <light bulb goes on>. Did one of the FS group share the Jonathan Lemon work plan for the top 25 teams with you? If you agree, I think Bill Patton (alias C2Bill) might consider these attributes (team gains/losses, meters/day, calendar, etc) as the essence of th...
