Hello Fellow Indoor Rowers,

I don't post much, though I really enjoy reading this board and in doing so have learned more that I could ever adequately show appreciation for. I thought that my last post--the one identifying Chad's plagiarism--would constitute my entire contribution for the year. However, I find myself wanting to chime in yet again. Fortunately, this time it's very positive.

About 3 years ago I bought a C-Breeze from Paul Smith. Actually, I bought two, one for my Father and one for me. I cannot speak for my father other than to say that he has expressed to me that he is pleased with his C-Breeze. I, on the other hand, am absolutely sold. Between Paul Smith's prompt and considerate service and the quality of the product itself, it is a wonder that every erg is not so equipped. Keep at it, Paul. I am certain that your hard work will eventually result in "a C-Breeze for every erg" (a slogan maybe?).

Here is the actual reason for my post, along with an apology for being such a windy academic. It was without reservation, based on my prior experience, that I ordered from Paul a Core Performance CP1 roll-permitter (inducer, in my case) for my erg. It arrived yesterday.

(1) Paul Smith was--again--prompt, understanding and courteous in all our correspondence.

(2) My CP1 arrived in good time and in what I must say was the most careful and complete packaging I have seen.

(3) The CP1 device itself is a solid piece of equipment. I don't think I could break it if I tried. It is engineered with the same sort of ruggedness that the C2 erg is. From that standpoint it is an ideal addition.

(4) Installation took <5 minutes (as advertised; and remember, I'm a hopeless academic--a statistics professor, at that.), and the CP1 came with appropriately designed Allen wrenches (as advertised). All I needed was a flathead screwdriver (my wife had one, though she's a statistician also).

(5) I am convinced, based on only two workouts so far, that the CP1 will help me correct several flaws in my indoor and on-the-water stroke. Simply put, it responds like a single when I screw up and let's me know that I did something I shouldn't have. The payoff is that I'll screw up in my single less when I'm on the water and stay drier.

(6) Paul is prompt, courteous, considerate and a fine person to do business with.

Summary: if you seriously want to improve your performance on the water or on the erg, contact Paul Smith and get a CP1.

Thank you Will, it's great to hear that you are pleased with the CP1 (and CBreeze), and that your experience is similar to mine, it made balance issues very obvious so they could be addressed directly.

Perhaps we could use this thread to describe the types of workouts we find useful on the CP1.

Sticking with my common theme of 8k, I've come to like an alternating series of 2k, 1k, 2k, 1k, 2k with the 2k's in the "Fixed Mode" and just enough time in-between to change the mode and set up the next workout, perhaps up to a minute, though I should probably just program in a single workout to tidy up the process.

And come up with a shorthand terminology.
Fixed Mode (Fx)
Movable Mode (Mv)

So the short description of the above:
Variable intervals, 2kFx, 1kMv, 2kFx, 1kMv, 2kFx, 1 minute rests.

I am open to any suggestions or discussions on how to best train with the CP1. I may be overdoing it, but everything seems to feel OK.

On Wed. I did 11'MV + 11'Fx + 11'Mv all UT1. The warm up and cool down were 1/2Fx and 1/2Mv.

Yesterday, I did the same wamr up and cool down (1/2 Fx & 1/2 Mv). The actual workout was 48'UT2. The first 44' were Fx and the last 4' with Mv. I wanted to see how I would do when I was tired and, more importantly, when my attention was near its worst. I think I did OK--a few wobbles here and there. But, I was much more alert during the last 4' than I usually am.

If you like C-Breeze (and who doesn't) and the CP1, think of the fun you'll have when you try Paul's ErgMonitor software. It is a masterful tool for examining one's workouts, even if, as in my case, it has laid bare all of the flaws in my stroke (sigh).

There is still more fun to be had from Paul's bag of goodies.

I can understand how it may appear that they must be "family members", but seriously, folks have simply enjoyed the products offered at PS Sport, I'm quite picky about what is offered, and only do so after I have found something to be very useful personally.

The kudos for CP1 packaging and shipping goes completely to the Core Perform Folks, they do a splendid job.

Sure, it's just rather expensive to do so. I'm taking care of some orders to the UK now and hope to have more specific information regarding what to expect regarding Duty and VAT, though that would be collected on the recipients end.

Gosh Paul !!! You seem to be into everything these days. Are you going to tell us some more about these boats you distribute. How do they compare to those other boats made in China from Wintech. I saw a Swift boat for the first time loaded on a boat trailer here. It caught my eye because for some reason it stood out from the other boats on the trailer. Not sure if that's good or bad and have yet to hear how they go on the water.

One of these days I'm going to get ErgMonitor but am not sure how I'd cope with all those numbers and info on the monitor when one becomes light headed from exhaustive erging. Are there any plans to upgrade the product or expand it?

Speaking of other kinds of boats, has anyone on this forum had any experience with the Virus brand of boats from France? I am especially interested in the "gooney-rigged" shells, i.e. those with fixed seats and and moveable stretcher/rigger units. I know that FISA banned that sort of rig from racing years ago when they were beating everything in sight, but I am interested only in a recreation shell, not for racing. The main thing that I am concerned about is that they might be too heavy for me to handle from a car top rack. I am also wondering how they feel. The forward push on the boat is done by the tailbone. This sounds like it might cause problems. I would like to hear what experiences that others might have had with these boats - both the brand (with its ominous name) and the reverse rigging.

Well, as is my standard practice when considering a new product offering, I bought one myself to make sure that it was something I would be confident in offering my customers, and I am very pleased with our 2x/2-. I've rowed it quite a bit with my wife, as well as a few outings with my M2x partner (Dan and I are a bit to heavy for the design weight, but can manage on nice water), being an Empacher clone it moves just as expected, we've sprinted to a 1:29 Best Pace, and paddle along quite easily at 1:58 R25. The pricing is of course quite amazing, and there will be an official Ad in the Rowing News this coming month. I think WinTech has made great strides in the past year, having a few of the older line in the boathouse (one of which I bought for our club), however if I were doing it again, I would be donating a Swift Racing 1x instead.

ErgMonitor is in continual expansion and upgrade mode, though the current project has to do with porting the code to a new language. Once a license is purchased the newest version is only a download away when it is released, at this time we have no plans to charge for the downloadable updates.

Regarding the vast display of data, you really do get used to it quite quickly and are able to pick out the bits that are important to you while rowing and ignore the ones that you may want to look at in later review.
